Hope Astronaut’s third album, “Balance in the Heights” contains eight songs the folk-rock band recorded in 2016 and 2017 with the producer Tomáš Neuwerth in his Animan studio in Kopřivnice. The new record follows up the previous one, “Someone’s Missing” (2013), while being more colourful and perhaps » show more
more pop in sound and arrangements.
“We have rearranged some songs, changed the drum parts, and made the compositions simpler. I wanted to make the album more varied and at the same time more compact,” said the producer and an accomplished drummer Tomáš Neuwerth (Kittchen, Kafka Band) about the recording process.
In addition to his main role as a producer, Tomáš Neuwerth also added some guitars and percussions. “It was like he became a member of the band. We’ve gone to the bone on the new songs. For the first time in my life, I even played banjo and got to strum the guitar strings with a screwdriver,” added Tomáš Krejčiřík, Hope Astronaut’s frontman and songwriter.
Several guests participated in the recording: violinist Robin Lefner, singer Zuzana Pustinová, busker Terez Wrau, and Tomáš Chudoba who recorded electric guitars and later joined the band as its full-time member.
The album’s title references constant balancing in our lives. The lyrics do not just deal with the turmoil in relationships but also the joy of travelling (in Trip) or moving away (in Far Away). “Several songs were written shortly after saying farewell to a place where I spent more than a quarter of a century, a fact that inevitably found a way into the lyrics. When pondering over the title, an inspiration came from the memories of my grandpa who took me to the High Tatras in Slovakia when I was little and carried me on his shoulders to the highest tops,” explained the singer.
The record was mixed in Helsinki by Tuomas Hakkarainen (Kaspar, John McGregor), with whom the band has cooperated since the beginning, and mastered by Dan Václavek. The album’s graphic layout, dominated by an analogue photo of tower cranes in Warsaw, was created by Andrea Čepová.
Live recording of a melancholic song, Colour (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4zv8Byj-SM), was a harbinger of the album, followed by a video for the first single, Feel This Way (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXEtxgeZ5CY).
